Everyone has a soft spot for the quirky and unusual, and that’s why our whistlestop tour through time and space has made a visit to the Cromford & High Peak. You want history? It was built in 1831. You want unusual? How about cable-operated inclines on dramatic 1-in-8/1-in-9 gradients? You want quirky? What could be better than a motley fleet of locomotives, including ex-north London railway 0-6-0Ts that are extinct elsewhere, or the Kitson ‘0F’ 0-4-0STS that BR was still building in the 1950s?

1932-built Kitson ‘0F’ No. 47000 drags another load of wagons over the Sheep Pasture incline’s kip and past the winding engine house. Included in the train are two EX-LNWR tenders, now converted to carry water for those who live on the wilder, more remote stretches of the line.
