THE STOOGES’ DARTH VADER OF GUITAR!

-

What music are you currently grooving to? In order to make it the best that I possibly can, I’m currently pretty consumed with three singles that I’m putting out this year. The first one [I Love My Tutu] is a Hawaiian/reggaestyle song. The second is with Petra Haden, who I’ve been wanting to record for years now. That said, my son exposed me to Parov Stelar, pretty interesting stuff.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album? On any given day my answers would change… among the list: everything by Bob Dylan, especially Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde, most of the Stones stuff but especially Exile On Main St., Loaded and the ‘Banana Album’ from the Velvets, Jeff Beck’s Truth, Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert, Kinda Kinks and many others by The Kinks, Having A Rave Up With The Yardbirds, and Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Moondance. What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it? Frankly, I don’t remember. I’d been listening to a lot of Elvis Presley but they came from my older sister. I guess it might have been some movie soundtracks while I lived in Oklahoma in elementary school. I was big on western themes.

Which musician other than yourself have you ever wanted to be? Bob Dylan. If it was going to be a guitar player, then Jeff Beck or Link Wray. If a singer, then Roy Orbison.

What do you sing in the shower? I don’t. I have a terrible singing voice.

What is your favourite Saturday night record? Perhaps Wooly Bully or Louie Louie.

And your Sunday morning record? Blonde On Blonde, or perhaps Iggy And The Stooges’ The Departed.

James and Lisa Kekaula’s single I Love My Tutu is out now, for the Project Hawai’i charity. See helpthehomelesskeiki.org
