FOLKIES SET FREE

Mayor Robert Wagner lifts the ban on folk singers congregating in New York’s Washington Square. The Village Voice reports that “hundreds of guitar-twangers, yodellers and their friends” descended on the forum, the final tally proving in excess of 5,000. No rules were enforced, though one Police Commissioner told the singers to “keep in tune and keep your beards combed.”
