Sneaks

It’s A Myth MERGE. CD/DL/LP

- Ben Myers

Less-is-more punk funk onewoman band.

Otherwise known as Washington DC native Eva Moolchan, Sneaks presents a second album that is an exercise in electro minimalism. Here 10 bass-lead songs of beats and deadpan vocals occupy just 18 minutes; like the pioneering hardcore punks of Dischord Records, it wastes no moment, leaves no fat on the bone. But that’s where the comparison ends: instead of bluster and rage, on Hair Slick Back and the jerkfunk of Inside Edition, Sneaks evokes the female post-punk spirits of Bush Tetras, ESG and Delta 5. On PBNJ (these acronymic titles reduce the pieces further still) Moolchan’s often-spoken vocals are laconic and playfully detached, while Daffodils is a fleeting 20-second synth riff. Collectively, It’s A Myth is like a musical Mondrian painting: all bold lines and defined patterns effortlessly delivered, but oblique and enigmatic too.
