3 Loudon Wainwright III
Strange Weirdos
CONCORD/UNIVERSAL 2007, FROM £5 You Say: “Haven’t seen the movie this soundtracked but the album’s a revelation. He’s still hungry to write good songs.” Cath Berry, via e-mail There’s a particular Loudon Wainwright-brand irony in one of his finest, most emotionally focused albums being shackled with the subtitle of Music From And Inspired By The Film Knocked Up. Effectively another concept album, … Weirdos captures the bittersweet drift of life in the Valley for Hollywood dreamers (“I lost the thread among the vines” – You Can’t Fail Me Now). Co-produced by Wainwright and Joe Henry, with contributions from Van Dyke Parks and Richard Thompson, the whole album possesses a lush, dreamlike, late-afternoon feel, and, with Grey In LA and Valley Morning, includes two of the all-time great California songs.
