One More Time With Feeling

- Andrew Perry

PULSE/ICONOCLAST/DIR ANDREW DOMINIK. DVD/BR/3D-BR

Luminous document of Cave’s creative exorcism of paternal bereavement

Andrew Dominik’s harrowing account of Cave forging on with the making of Skeleton Tree in the shadow of his son Arthur’s death broke hearts when shown in cinemas on the LP’s release day. The idea was to keep the world away, by means of this solitary promotional tool. However, after decades of fierce artistic remove, Cave ended up letting the world in, revealing the depth of his family’s loss in the movie, even admitting he wanted everyone to know they were OK. As such, One More Time With Feeling might stand as a testament to debilitating grief – but it’s so much more. Watching further down the line, minus the 3D glasses (special Blu-ray excepted), the film is remarkable for its artiness, its meta distancing, its depiction of vigour and rebuilding.
