Filling in for someone of Fernando Alonso’s calibre and then outqualifying Jenson Button on your first drive in the car is a pretty impressive way to mark your F1 arrival. OK, Button did quickly jump ahead in the race before his Mclaren failed, but a point on Vandoorne’s F1 debut for a team that only scored 27 all last year got everyone’s attention. Honourable mentions go to Romain Grosjean for his combative fifth for Haas and Daniil Kvyat for the fine recovery after his qualifying struggles.
