Mcmullan ties up Formula Ford 1600 return

-

Reigning National Formula Ford 1600 champion Jonny Mcmullan will return to the series this year, driving a brand new Van Diemen for Oldfield Motorsport.

Last season Mcmullan competed in the Motorsport Ireland Bernard Dolan-run Van Diemen LA10 but he will now switch teams.

Mcmullan is only confirmed for the first round at Oulton Park on April 9 at the moment, but he wants to complete the full season.

“I’ll definitely be doing Oulton and after that it’s round by round,” he said. “I’m trying to get the budget to do the full year so I can try to win the championship and get the Mazda Road to Indy shootout prize. I’ve been trying to get to America for a while and this is a good prize.

“I’m looking forward to getting back racing. I haven’t tested the car before so I will be going in at the deep end.”

Stuart Gough won the 2014 title with Oldfield and the team is looking for more success.

Boss James Oldfield added: “It’s a late deal but we’ve finally got it together. As soon as we announced we were running the new Van Diemen, Jonny was one of the first drivers to get in touch. It’s great we’ve got championshipwinning drivers wanting to come on board with us.

“Jonny will attempt to hold onto his title – it’s a bold statement but we are a championship-winning team ourselves. It’s going to be competitive this year and it’s not going to be easy.”
