Marshal injured by errant FF1600 wheel at Kirkistown
A marshal was injured during last weekend’s Kirkistown 500 MRCI meeting after being struck by a loose wheel during one of the Formula Ford 1600 races.
The marshal suffered a broken nose, concussion and facial lacerations after he was struck by the front-right wheel assembly of Ian Mcculla’s Reynard, which had broken clear of the vehicle on the approach to the Chicane.
The debris – which included the wheel, brake disc and suspension components – flew into a nearby marshals’ hut where it hit the marshal. The marshal was then taken to the circuit’s medial centre, before later being moved to a nearby hospital. He was discharged the same night.
Kirkistown’s Richard Young added: “It was a freak accident, and we’re still going through all the data. We’ll be taking a look at the debris fencing too. The marshal hut is quite out the way and out of the line of fire, so it was unusual.”
