Munnings finishes tough debut rally
Eighteen-year- old novice rally driver Catie Munnings achieved her goal of finishing the Ypres Rally before having to return home to Kent before the rally start to sit her final biology A-level exam.
Her start to the European Rally Championship counter couldn’t have gone worse after she crashed her Peugeot 208 R2 at the pre-event test.
“It’s fair to say the rally didn’t get off to an easy start, but then we were able to steadily improve and get to the end, which was my only objective,” said Munnings, who was taking part in only her sixth rally and her first event with pace notes and an R2 car. Having started the event with a gap of 17 seconds per kilometre to the fastest R2 runner, she got that down to 10 seconds per kilometre by the end, finishing 65 th overall and winning the ladies’ category. Munnings, whose father Chris competed on the Belgian championship in the 1990s, is planning selected ERC outings this year prior to the entire ERC Junior Championship in 2017.
