And so they have done it again. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have hit the headlines by hitting each other. Yes, it is becoming repetitive, but it certainly is not becoming boring.

The intra-team implosion in Austria is another example that the Mercedes-benz operation has two drivers who simply don’t want to lose – and that should be the strongest weapon in any driver’s arsenal. That unflinching dedication to victory is what marks out the real winners from those who make up the numbers.

But this latest debacle has prompted team bosses to utter the words ‘team orders’. You can understand why. Mercedes are in the sport to write headlines by rewriting history in terms of success. They are not going to be particularly pleased with multi-media images of stroppy drivers and broken cars.

Merc has dominated, and the spark between Hamilton and Rosberg has kept the interest high, despite silverwash that the sport has been going through. I hope that those in charge of Merc realise that the intensity of the battle is what gains publicity, not a choreographed two-step. Matt James, Editor
