I presume someone paid for Jack Benyon to go to the Rally Isle of Man, in so much as the ferry or flight ( MN, September 21).
As one who was at the event, would Jack please consider the cost that has to be faced by spectators in purely crossing to the Isle of Man.
Not a lot of change out of £200 for the return fare on the ferry, which in my case is equivalent to about 165 litres of fuel.
Based on my car averaging more than 12 miles per litre (54mpg), the ferry fare is the equivalent of travelling over 1950 miles to rallies or other motorsport activity.
While I live north of Watford, the mileage to an average rally, return, is less than 500 miles. Put simply, do I do four rallies across the mainland of England, Wales and Scotland or do I traverse the Irish sea to Douglas?
The spectator issue could be solved at a stroke, half the ferry prices during the event (and the Manx National), but as long as the ferry company can fill the limited number of ferries, they are happy and the spectators will stay away. Bob Wright Leeds
