Guards Trophy gets two champions

-

The Guards Trophy title race ended in a tie after the final race at Silverstone on Saturday when John Davison (Lotus Elan) and Martin Richardson (MGB) could not be split even by a tie-breaker.

In a topsy-turvy race, Davison only needed to finish to be crowned champion, but suffered an electrical fire on the grid and, after hasty repairs, finally retired after nine laps.

Instead, defending champion Mike Gardiner and co-driver Dan Cox (TVR Griffith) looked set for the title but a lack of class starters meant reduced points and left them short.

Meanwhile 2007 champion Richardson won his class and, unknowingly, equalled Davison’s score. Both drivers had four class wins and one second place. It is the first time in the series’ 43-year history it has had joint champions.
