Support championships decided in Germany
With the Estering circuit hosting the final European-based World RX event of the year, the deciding rounds of the European Rallycross Championship for Touringcar and Super1600 took place in Germany.
Ben-philip Gundersen and Krisztian Szabo claimed the Touringcar and Super1600 titles respectively.
Gundersen only finished in fifth position in the Touringcar final while season-long points rival Magda Andersson finished on the podium, but Gundersen claimed the overall crown by a single point.
Polesitter David Nordgard won the rear-wheel-drive final.
It was a similar situation in the Super1600 category, where the championship leader heading into the event, Ulrik Linnemann, suffered from driveshaft failure in Q4 dropping him down the Intermediate Classification standings.
The Dane fought back in the semi-final and final but third place in the final, despite having been sixth on lap one, wasn’t enough to stop Szabo from taking the crown.
“Before the semi-final was the most nervous I have been in my life,” said Szabo. “I just had to give it everything in the final – it didn’t just depend on me, I just had to win and see what else happened.
“Yes, I was so lucky today, but luck is also part of this sport I think. I will defend my title next season.
“Andreas Bakkerud won Super1600 twice before he moved to Supercar so maybe I can follow on his road.
“My dream is to race a Supercar, we will see what happens after this.”
