Thompson steps up to UK Clio Cup for 2017

-

Former Fiesta Junior champion Aaron Thompson will switch to the Renault UK Clio Cup with Jamsport for this season.

Thompson raced in the main Fiesta championship last year, finishing sixth in the Class C standings, and will remain with the Jamsport squad he secured his Junior title with in 2015.

“I ticked off most boxes in the Fiestas – I won the Junior title with a record number of wins and won races in Fiestas last year and thought the next step would be Clios,” he said. “Jamsport has been successful in the Clio Cup so it wasn’t a hard choice to stick with them. I have a very good relationship with them.

“I had one day of testing at Donington Park and it went really well. I fell in love with the car – I knew it was the car for me. The difference between a Fiesta and Clio is a lot because it’s a race car made by Renault. The Fiesta is essentially a glorified track day car and the grip level in the Clios is something I’ve never experienced before.”

Thompson says this year will be a steep learning curve and hasn’t set any targets.

“I just want to finish, get some experience and have fun,” he added. “That’s the reason I started racing and the reason I continue racing.”
