What about fun?

I was astonished to read the quote from Ray Breen last week saying: “Nobody should rally for fun, if you want fun, pick another sport.”

Does this mean his son Craig is not having fun in the WRC?

Does it also mean that the hundreds of clubmen around the country who sacrifice a lot, financially, to compete at whatever level they can afford, do not have any fun?

It’s all very well for those with money to run an R5 or a WRC car to make condescending comments because after all, they can simply make another bank transfer to make their rallying happen.

Do those same people ever stop to think that the clubmen are the filling in the sandwich that provide the numbers to enable events to run?

Just 10 R5s and three WRC cars, although great to watch (depending on who is driving), could never on their own render an event viable.

And finally, does Mr Breen also not consider the hundreds of unpaid volunteers who have fun doing what they do, for the privileged (drivers) to have fun doing what they love, rally driving?

Alonso admired

It is a shame that Fernando Alonso’s Daytona 24 Hours didn’t produce the results that he wanted, but hopefully that means it will just be unfinished business for him.

His desire to do all these different races is superb, and just what a competitive racing driver needs. And I simply can’t wait to see him when he finally tackles the Le Mans 24 Hours, whenever that finally happens.

It is almost a shame that he has a contract with Mclaren to race in F1, which seems to be getting in the way of his plans to tackle all kinds of events.

I hope he puts Bathurst and a NASCAR race on his radar too. Just imagine.
