Red Jet sets round-island record

High-speed ferry lays down a new challenge for motor boats

-

Red Funnel’s Red Jet 6 has set a time of 1h 17m 17s for the anti-clockwise circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight. Red Funnel engaged the services of the World Sailing Speed Record Council to oversee the attempt. Starting and finishing on the Royal Yacht Squadron line off Cowes, the average recorded speed for the 50.78-mile course was 39.42 knots.

The record for multi-hull sailing boats was broken in July this year when the 70ft trimaran Concise 10 shaved a minute off Phaedo3’ s time of 2h 2m 31s set last year.

Kevin George, Red Funnel’s CEO commented, “The quad-powered vessel is the fastest Red Jet in our fleet. As she was built on the Island by Wight Shipyard, it is only fitting that she should set a benchmark time for the multihulls to try and beat.”
