Got a big boat? No, I mean a really big boat. This latest engine from German manufacturer MTU weighs in at 42 tonnes and its 278 litres produce 670hp from each of its 16 cylinders for a total of just over 10,000hp. But what’s most incredible, once you’ve digested those stats, is learning that this is a new compact version of the existing 20-cylinder MTU 8,000! They don’t mess about, the Germans. It’s designed for naval craft, though they do offer it for (very) large private yachts. Common rail fuel injection allied to electronic engine control ensure emissions low enough to meet IMO Tier 2 and EPA Tier 2 regulations.
