CASIO G-SHOCK GWF-A1000
Casio might not have quite the cachet of Rolex, and its model designation of GWFA1000 doesn’t have the same ring to it as ‘Submariner’, but if pure functionality is your thing, it’s probably a better watch. Part of the Frogman range that launched in 1993, it has that rock-solid demeanour of all G-SHOCK models from the Japanese company. What’s new for a Frogman is the analogue (as opposed to digital) display. And what’s neat about that is that it includes a function whereby the hands can be made to line up with each other to create a single pointer that counts down your dive time, making it easy to read underwater at a glance.
But there’s so much more. It can receive radio wave time calibration signals, self-adjusting to ensure to-the-second accuracy. Sensors measure dive depth, and there’s even a tide indicator that links via Bluetooth to the smartphone app so that you can set it easily to current location. It also automatically logs diving spots and times. Once it is paired with the app, the user is able to review a record of their diving activities. World time lists 300 cities, it switches to British Summer Time automatically and there are two intensities of LED light, ‘Afterglow’ and ‘Super Illuminator’.
Solar-powered, its carbon monocoque case with triple gasket seals give it 200m depth of water resistance, and the sapphire crystal (watch glass) is incredibly scratch-resistant.
