BOAT CUISINE

It may be named after a pooch, but there’s not a dog’s breakfast in sight at this chic Cornish restaurant. Phil Sampson reports

Hungarian Vizslas are persuasive animals.

There used to be one at a local pub of ours who would lean against people at the bar and gently nudge them towards the jar of doggie treats. It worked for him, and it now looks as if another Vizsla, Indi, has taken matters a stage further by persuading her owners Simon and Vanessa Clark to name their restaurant after her. (And just in case you’re wondering if Indidog has anything to do with that old chestnut, “Where’s my dinner?” you’re wrong!)

Indidog is a smart and shiny eatery overlooking Falmouth’s Fish Strand Quay. Those familiar with the area may remember the site’s previous occupant, The Waterman’s pub, but an extensive renovation by the Clarks has made the place unrecognisable. Gone is the tired interior and aged painted-concrete façade, replaced by a bright, modern and airy saloon and a glitzy waterside terrace edged with a glass balustrade that not only checks the wind but looks great too.

For a restaurant which has only been open for less than a year, the coronavirus hit Indidog hard. But, Falmouth has long triumphed in the face of adversity (just ask the Spanish armada) and Simon and Vanessa were in no mind to be defeated. Instead, they redoubled their efforts and crafted a bespoke menu for these takeaway times.

While lockdown has prevented

MBY from sampling the fare personally,

St Mawes residents and Indidog regulars Mark and Emma Hayman kindly hopped aboard their Merry Fisher 895 Yolo and crossed the Carrick Roads to provide us with this report: “Indidog is a thriving eatery which has brilliantly evolved to offer barbeques on the harbour and takeaway versions of the brunches for which they are famed. Our favourites from the lockdown menu include BBQ Cornish lobster, falafel koftas, maple pancake stack, and the awesome breakfast salad, which is perfect for vegans, vegetarians and anyone requiring a gluten-free meal. And don’t forget to wash it all down with a glass of fizz, a Bloody Mary or a totally indulgent Nutella milkshake!”

Sounds good to us so if any readers have a similar recommendation for a top-quality boat-friendly eatery please email us at mby@futurenet.com

VERDICT In creating Indidog, Simon and Vanessa Clark have invested in quality and created a restaurant fit for the most discerning boater. For our part, we can’t wait for the day we’ll be able to tie up in Falmouth harbour and test the menu for ourselves.
