SURVEYOR’S REPORT
The F46 is a striking-looking boat with angular lines, acres of glass and Cummins Zeus pod drives but as with any boat there are a number of things to look out for when considering buying second-hand.
■ The Zeus pod system seems to be particularly sensitive to fouling so its performance can drop off substantially over the season if left unscrubbed.
■ The angular design and large areas of glazing creates the potential for surface cracks and stress crazing of the gel coat. Take a close look at any sharp edges and corners for signs of this.
■ The aft end of the flybridge is supported on angled pillars but still has a substantial overhang behind them. Carefully inspect mouldings and support structures for possible crazing around hard points like this especially if you suspect it has been used hard in a big seaway. If the boat is used with sympathy, this should not be an issue.
■ Ensure that the ergonomics of the flybridge appeal to you and your family on a cruise of a few hours – not just an hour’s run. The layout and seating style suits some but not others.
■ Ensure that the engines’ service history is checked and verified – including heat exchanger cleaning. A thorough sea trial when surveying is vital, with an extended run at maximum revs to ensure temperatures remain within specs throughout.
■ Consider having a mid-season pressure wash in July/ August to clear the underwater sections. Concentrate on the sterngear as a few barnacles or some weed growth on the props has a disproportionate effect on speed and efficiency. This will save you money in the long run and the lift out will also give you early warning of anode wastage or prop issues.
Assuming your surveyor gives it a clean bill of health the F46 represents a lot of boat for the money and should make an excellent platform for family holidays afloat. Chris Olsen, Olsen Marine Surveying
