Well made, well fitted out and rugged, the Rodman 800 is like the Toyota Land Cruiser of the boat world. All the Rodmans that I have surveyed over the years have felt just that way – a boat that you should have no qualms in going out in even if you end up being caught out in a big sea. The hull form on this craft is deep-vee, and the combination of the deep shear plus the flared bows provides excellent seakeeping confidence. Safe walkaround decks with high cockpit gunwhales and handholds are a major hallmark of this boat, and provide a most reassuring feel for all on board.
Points to note when considering buying:
■ Spend time ensuring the flybridge layout and the route to and from it, especially the design of the stairs and handholds, suits your requirements.
■ Try sea-trialling it in a seaway to ensure that it trims to
your satisfaction and confidence.
■ Being shaftdrive, the longitudinal weight distribution and low centre of gravity should help stability. However, engine access could be tricky for maintenance.
■ Check carefully for evidence of water ingress in the engine space and lazarette bilges.
■ If water has entered the engine space, check for corrosion issues with the ancillaries around the engine.
■ Hulls are well laid up and strong but always inspect internally where possible to check for obvious signs of damage around superstructure mouldings.
■ Check the Yanmar servicing history prior to purchase, not forgetting heat exchanger cleaning, and crankcase breather filters etc.
These are robust and powerful fast fishing/cruising boats. Provided you find a good example, and you are personally satisfied with the layout, type and style of this boat, you will be delighted with its feel on the water.
