BMW F650 GS (2000-on)

-

‘F650 GS’ actually covers two main models: the 2000-2008 bike based around the original single-cylinder ‘Funduro’ from the 1990s, and the more recent twin-cylinder version. Even more confusingly, the later 650 is actually an 800, using a detuned version of the 798cc parallel twin from the F800 GS. The older single is a simpler setup, with fewer toys, and 20bhp less power. It’s not massively lighter though, just 7kg down on the twin in terms of kerb weight.

The single shows its age, and the twin is much smoother, faster and more civilised. There’s also a lot more optional BMW accessories available on the later bike, including the usual heated grips and hard luggage, trip computer, crash bars and extra lighting. Having said that, if you’re sold on the single (it has super-low running costs), the aftermarket will provide much of what you want.

Check with a BMW dealer for any recalls or updates: there were some problems with electrics/switchgear on BMs around 2008-10, and earlier single 650s sometimes have regulator/rectifier and wiring connector woes.

As ever with BMW, the initial purchase price might be a bit higher than the competition – but you often get your money back with higher resale values when moving it on again afterwards.

The F650 GS twin was replaced by the F700 GS in 2012, and the single cylinder 650 also reappeared as the G650 X around 2008-9 and the G650 GS around 2011.
