Is this the baby Harley-Davidson we’ve been waiting for?
The massive Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Qianjiang has just announced a new small cruiser model in its home market – and with its rounded lines and its V-Twin engine, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a little Harley-Davidson.
Qianjiang has made a name for itself in recent years with its sympathetic revival of the small Italian manufacturer Benelli, but it’s actually made headlines more recently thanks to its ties to Harley-Davidson, since it became the American factory’s development partner for upcoming entry-level models for Asian markets.
But in a newly released 15-second video, Qianjiang has announced its new QJMotor SRV300. It’s essentially just a teaser for the new machine, showing off its cruiser styling, twin exhausts and its V-Twin engine configuration – giving it an unmistakable air of H-D Sportster styling.
The type approval documents filed for the bike in Asia confirm a few additional bits of information about the machine, namely that its liquidcooled 296cc twin motor kicks out 29bhp, but aside from that we don’t know much at all about the new cruiser.
Of course, there has been no confirmation that HarleyDavidson’s going to put its name to the SRV300, but considering its hotly anticipated 388R liquid-cooled in-line twin powered flat tracker (that we’ve been banging on about for months) can’t be far away from production, there’s a very good chance the Americans have a few more irons in the fire as it looks to cash in on the brand’s long-standing popularity in emerging markets. Whether or not it’s a rebadged version of the SRV remains to be seen. Regardless, it’s always worth keeping an eye on what’s going on in China, with quality ever improving and many of the bigger manufacturers making use of its numerous production facilities.
