A night in the desert

-

For many of us, Morocco is the closest faraway place. Although close to Europe, it offers a completely different culture, feel, experience and scenery. Some bikers opt to ride in from Europe and only have one week or 10 days to spare for this vast country, obviously wanting to visit the Imperial cities and ride the passes in the Atlas Mountains. Most only make it to Erfoud, Errachidia or Zagora as the closest thing to the desert, and miss out on one of the greatest experiences. It is well worth taking the time and plan to spend a night in a desert camp, be it in the dunes of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga (the latter demands more time as the dunes are a fair way away from the nearest settlements). Make sure you arrive early to the dunes. if you opt for Merzouga, very early afternoon is your target as you will be able to walk amongst the dunes, rent dune buggies or enduro bikes, get a 4x4 drive around or a camel ride and, most importantly, you will have enough time to change into something comfy and hike one of the high dunes to watch the magical sunset. There are a number of camps you can choose from and most good hotels will set you up for this experience. Make sure to opt for a ‘luxury camp’. The extra price will give you wi-fi access, charging capabilities, even heating and your en-suite bathroom in the tent. You will spend dinner in the camp under the stars and the cloudless sky will provide a unique opportunity to see the stars and Milky Way as never before. It is usually the highlight of our Atlas and Desert tour. Note that the sky is less likely to be clouded in winter months, but the night temperatures are also cooler so prepare with warm clothes for the evening and morning.
