It is no longer news that the World Endurance Championship is one of the great success stories of modern motorsport, but this season the omens are looking even better than they did in 2015.

This time last year, we already had a pretty good idea that Toyota wouldn’t really be in the fight, and so it proved. But if the new TS050 is as good as Anthony Davidson thinks it is, we could be in for a three-way fight, and with three different looking LMP1 racers. You could certainly tell the Toyota, Porsche 919 and Audi R18 apart if they were all painted white.

For my money, the 2016 version of the 919 is one of the best looking sportscars for ages. Due to aero requirements and knowledge, the noses of top-level sportscars haven’t been the prettiest things in recent years, but the 919 reverses that trend.

The GT cars (almost) always look great, though I think those massive rear diffusers will take some getting used to. This year we also have two old foes – Ferrari and Ford – going at it again. Not to mention an improved Aston Martin and Porsche.

My only real gripe about Silverstone’s WEC opener is that it clashes with the first British GT round at Brands Hatch. And the British Touring Car visit to Donington Park. It’s nothing new, but sometimes motorsport really doesn’t do itself any favours... Kevin Turner, Editor
