Foust pushes out his lead in Global Rallycross

VW Andretti Autosport driver Tanner Foust extended his lead at the head of the American-based Global Rallycross Championship at Daytona last weekend by claiming victory on the second day of a double-header event.

Steve Arpin won on Saturday at the wheel of an M-sport-built Ford Fiesta Supercar run by the Chip Ganassi Racing team, with Brian Deegan second. Swede Sebastien Eriksson finished on the podium in Olsbergsmse’s new Honda Civic. Scott Speed retired after a fire engulfed the front of his VW Beetle, while Foust crashed out following suspension damage.

The second day was better for the VW pair, Foust claiming victory ahead of Speed and Eriksson. Speed was using a different Beetle chassis such was the extent of the damage on day one.

The annual BRISCA F1 visit to Ipswich proved to be a good one for the lower grade drivers.

All five races went to drivers from the yellow grade while the star drivers, handicapped by starting at the rear of the field, struggled to catch those starting at the front of the grid.

Stuart Shevill Jr has won just about everything in the Saloon Stock car class, but his switch over to F1s has seen him struggle with car woes, bad luck and getting to grips with a machine that is totally different.

Shevill began to turn things around last weekend at Skegness when he recorded his first heat win in F1s and on Saturday at Foxhall Heath he went one better by chalking up a heat and final double.

After battling with Jordan Falding for the lead in the early stages of the final, Shevill pulled away and was unchallenged. Falding held on to second place with Neil Scriven completing the podium places.

“I will have to try and do this again next week when the F1s come to Lochgelly,” said Shevill afterwards.

Second placeman Falding said afterwards: “I was trying a bit too hard at first and the car got loose, but Shevill was just too quick for me. I was hoping that some backmarkers might slow him down, but that didn’t happen. I got a heat race win and picked up a few world championship qualifying points so hopefully that will put me into a semi final.”

Scriven won the meetingending Grand National dash after making a quick gearbox change between races. After the race, he said: “This [new] gearbox was also making strange noises, this will have to come out now too.”
