Rivett and Coates take Clio spoils

Paul Rivett lost a win, claimed a win and missed out on a win in a mixed Croft for the three-time champion.

His weekend got off to a disappointing start when he was demoted in the second Donington Park race after Ant Whorton-eales was reinstated ( see racing news) after a technical problem. But Rivett soon made up for that by taking the first win.

Behind, Ciceley’s Max Coates was putting 2014 champion Mike Bushell under pressure for second and squeezed ahead through the Esses in the latter stages.

Rivett threatened to double up in race two after poleman Bushell ran wide at Hawthorn on the opening tour, but an electrical issue dropped him a lap down.

Another error from Bushell left Josh Price leading from Coates. Coates dispossessed the Pyro man at the hairpin at mid-distance and was able to fend off the best efforts of Bushell (who passed Price at Tower) to take his maiden win.

The 1988 Le Mans win for Jaguar is probably his greatest moment, but Andy Wallace racked up many more successes on his CV.

After winning the 1986 British Formula 3 title and a troubled F3000 campaign, Wallace switched to sportscars with the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Jaguar squad. As well as his Le Mans victory, he also won the 1990 Daytona 24 Hours before joining Toyota, adding the Sebring 12 Hours to his list in 1992 and 1993. Wallace was then a winner in the BPR Global Endurance GT series, driving a David Price Racing Mclaren F1 GTR.

He carved a fine career in America, winning races for both Dyson Racing and Panoz.

Wallace added two more Daytona victories with Dyson’s Riley and Scott in the late 1990s and still competes in historic events.
