Halo imperfect
Sebastian Vettel says more work is needed on F1’s halo cockpit protection device after testing the latest version in Friday practice at Silverstone. The Ferrari driver has raised concerns over visibility. “Forward visibility was fine because it was just an installation lap,” he said. “Full visibility was OK, obviously you still have something in the middle [the pillar], but you lose quite a bit on top of you. You’re not looking in the sky when you drive around but it needs some further running.”
Haas fielded teams in many other series – most notably in partnership with Lola in F1 with two largely unsuccessful years in 1985 and ’86. He also ran cars in Formula 5000, Can-am and NASCAR having been a racer himself in the 1950s.
Mario Andretti said: “Carl had a heart of gold and a deep commitment to our sport. He earned the respect and admiration of his competitors and all those who drove for him through the years for being tenacious yet fair.
“His legacy especially in Indycars will be his phenomenal record of victories and championships.
“When I recall the joys of my whole career, I have to include my tenure at Newman/haas because of the people.
“The sport has lost a colourful character, but Carl Haas is unforgettable. He will always be an icon in motorsports and myself and so many others have lost a dear friend.”
Bourdais added: “Back in 2002, Carl gave me the opportunity of a lifetime when he hired me to drive for the 2003 season.
“He did so with no sponsor to run the car, and I will be forever grateful for the faith he placed in me.
“Today, I can only feel privileged to have been able to contribute with poles, wins and championships to Carl’s racing legacy.”
