GREEN TAKES FIRST EVER ZANDVOORT WIN

Jamie Green said victory at Zandvoort was a “dream come true” after clinching his first win at the Dutch circuit in last Sunday’s second DTM race.

Having edged compatriot Gary Paffett for the race two pole, Green led away at the start but came under increasing pressure from those behind.

Race one winner Robert Wickens was the most aggressive of those to challenge the leader, the Canadian drawing alongside Green on lap 11 at Tarzan corner and drew alongside the Briton on the exit of the corner, but couldn’t force a way past.

Audi driver Green made the most of that break after his mandatory pitstop to edge clear while slicing through traffic, finishing a comfortable nine seconds clear of Paffett, who claimed a first podium of the season, and Edoardo Mortara.

Green is now second in the points, seven behind BMW’S Marco Wittmann.

“The two fifth places in qualifying and the race on Saturday were OK,” said Green. “[But] the pole position on Sunday was really great.

“In 2006, I’d taken pole position once before but for my first victory on this fantastic race track I had to wait for another 10 years.

“Winning at Zandvoort has always been my dream. Today, it came true.

“Zandvoort is one of the real driver tracks on the calendar. Winning here is really special for me.

“In the early stages, my rear-view mirror was filled and I thought winning would be difficult. But on my second set of tyres I was faster and able to control the race.”

Wickens failed to finish the second race after suffering a puncture, but took maximum points in the opening event with a dominant drive, the HWA driver leading from start to finish to take the flag comfortably clear of Wittmann and the Mucke Mercedes of Christian Vietoris.
