LETTERS Penalty kick

I have just seen that Triple Eight Racing is appealing against Josh Cook’s exclusion from the opening British Touring Car Championship race at Silverstone ( MN, September 21).

That made me think that there’s potentially a problem with the current regulations where the results of one race have a direct effect on the next.

If, for example, this appeal was successful I presume Cook’s result would be reinstated (potentially a race win here).

However, given that due to this exclusion on the day, he had to start race two at the back (with ballast) rather than the front row. This penalty in reality completely wipes out his day.

On this occasion the driver isn’t really going for the championship but if it had been, for example, Gordon Shedden or Sam Tordoff and the same penalty was applied and subsequently successfully appealed, the outcome of the championship could be massive, especially when it’s so tight between the leaders.

Is it time for each race to stand alone? With any penalties applying only to the race in question rather than having a potential day-ending knock-on effect?
