A select band of competitors travelled to the Isle of Anglesey at the end of September and a fabulous new venue for the Matthews Auto Salvage Car Trial, where Henry Kitching won his third event in four rounds and took the lead of the British championship.

The following day at the Derwydd Farm event near Corwen, he drove his Vauxhall Corsa sensibly and steadily to claim second place and his very first British Car Trials Championship, to add to the BTRDA Gold Star he lifted 11 months ago.

Barrie Parker (Westfield) should have pushed Kitching hard at Anglesey, but a mistake on his first test cost him a maximum of 12 points. He battled back to finish second in the end ahead of Rupert North’s Mini after Kevin Roberts dropped back with suspension trouble with his Dutton. In the second event, Parker made amends and took the top spot from the cautious Kitching. North was third again, ahead of Roberts.

1 Henry Kitching (Vauxhall Corsa) 69.5 per cent; 2 Barrie Parker (Westfield) 89.3 per cent; 3 Rupert North (Rover Mini); 4 Sion Rhisiart (Dutton Phaeton); 5 Kevin Roberts (Dutton Phaeton); 6 John Wadsworth (Ford Ka); 7 Richard Pain (Toyota Starlet); 8 Jeff Buchanen (Mazda MX-5); 9 John Turner (MG Midget); 10 Stephen Mcenhill (Citroen AX).
