The journalists were the ones who bore the full brunt of Lewis Hamilton’s frustrations last weekend in Japan, when he declared that he wasn’t keen on doing too many more press conferences with the written media after what he said were some disrespectful articles.

They only came after he had been extremely terse with the press at the pre-event conference, and something was clearly not right with the way he was behaving. His actions weren’t that of a top-level sportsman.

Those remarks follow hot on the heels of his outburst following the Malaysian Grand Prix, when his Mercedes power unit let him down as he seemed certain to claim his seventh victory of the 2016 campaign.

His anger at the German firm after Sepang boiled over, but it was probably understandable given that he had lost a shot at a race win. But his behaviour at Suzuka was bordering on the bizarre.

He fluffed his start to the race too and could only recover to third place. It has pushed him a long way from the championship summit, but some of the speed bumps that have been put in his way have been of his own making. Matt James, Editor
