Keep the thrills
I fully support the views of Martin Shaw ( MN, September 28) concerning the new and utterly nonsensical rules on spectating.
As somebody who both competed and spectated in the 1970s and 1980s when rallying was a truly popular spectator sport, I despair at the current takeover of our sport by the Health and Safety brigade.
Of course spectators have to be sensible, as do the competitors, but to me the cutting out of the Gribun Rocks section of the Tour of Mull, which my own pace notes marked as ‘care – danger of death’ but also represented the most fulfilling moments of my rally career when man and machine were truly in perfect harmony, is possibly the final nail in the coffin of a once great sport. As the signs say, motorsport is dangerous.

Next week it will be 25 years since Ayrton Senna claimed the third of his Formula 1 titles. And ahead of that, Sky Sports F1 is showing a couple of classic races from the 1991 season.
Senna’s path to title glory was not always a smooth one as the 1991 Spanish GP (Wednesday, 2100-2145hrs, Sky Sports F1) and British Grand Prix (Thursday, 21002145hrs, Sky Sports F1) demonstrate.
The legendary Brazilian’s nephew Bruno may no longer be on the Formula E grid but you can catch the action involving those who are still on Wednesday. There were plenty of new faces – such as triple World Touring Car champion Jose Maria Lopez and GP2 star Mitch Evans – making their debut in the first round of season three so tune in to find out how they got on in Hong Kong (1900-2000hrs, BT Sport 1).
Back on home turf, and the 750 Motor Club had a thrilling finale to many of its series at Donington Park earlier this month. The British weather intervened as well to add extra spice (Thursday, 1720-1925hrs, Motors TV).
Truck racing fans are treated to a double bill on Wednesday with first action from the British series from Snetterton (2100-2235hrs, Motors TV) and then highlights from the European championship at Jarama (22352305hrs, Motors TV).
And finally, there’s some rallying action from the recent MSA British Historic Rally Championship decider: the Trackrod Historic Cup. Find out who won on Friday (2135-2235hrs, Motors TV).
