GW to join British F4 grid for 2017 season

-

GW Motorsport is plotting a two-car entry into British F4 next year, becoming the first new team to join the series in two years.

The outfit is managed by former British F3 and EUROBOSS racer Gary Ward and has run Jacky Liu in the Monoposto F3 class this year. The 17-year-old Chinese driver will now step up to F4 with the team next year.

Ward bought an EX-JTR car for another driver but when he was unable to make a test, Liu had a run instead and was convinced F4 was the way to go.

“After working on it and running the car and seeing Jacky’s face there was no going back,” said Ward. “He absolutely loved the F4 car and said ‘can we do F4?’ I said ‘let’s go for it’.

“I love the way they [series bosses] control the cars and I like how they always want to strive to improve each year. They seem to have got it right so I want to be part of it.

“We have a very personal team and I’ve now got a karting team and an F4 race team over the same roof.”

Ward admitted that going up against much bigger operations would not be easy, but highlighted JHR Developments – second with Sennan Fielding this year – as an example of what can be done.

“JHR is a team I have a lot of admiration for and show you can put a car next to those [bigger international] teams in F4 and give them a run for their money,” he said.
