HOT RODS TO SIGN OFF AT WIMBLEDON
National Hot Rod racers will get their last chance to compete at the Wimbledon oval during the Best in Britain meeting at the venue on November 20, and they are urged to give the stadium a send-off to remember.
The annual Best in Britain meeting takes place over two weekends, with differing race line-ups at each meeting.
The National Hot Rod racers will get their chance to take part in the second of the two Sunday meetings for a non-championship one-off.
Spedeworth’s Dean Cox said that the meeting would be a milestone for the category and for the venue, which is under serious threat of closure as developers have permission to turn the oval into a football ground.
Cox said: “There is such a strong heritage for racing at Wimbledon, and we would urge any National Hot Rod racers to come and take part in what is sure to be an emotional evening.
“Hot Rods and Wimbledon are a great fit, and the Best in Britain meeting is a great way to sign off the category at the track in 2016. We would love to be back, but no one is sure what the future holds.”
Both Best in Britain meetings kick off at 1730hrs, and the second event will include Classic Hot Rods as well as stock cars on the bill alongside the regular National Hot Rod entrants.
Racing for other categories will continue at the venue for as long as is possible, but the future is unclear as various councils are debating the planning application that has been put in to turn the track into a football stadium and 602 residential units.
Thousands of short oval racing fans signed a petition to save the stadium, but it now seems likely that the bulldozers will move in early in the new year.
“Every meeting we have at Wimbledon from now on will be special, and we expect fans to turn out to support the drivers and the stadium itself. The Best in Britain will be part of that farewell,” said Cox.
