Ferrari lays out the keys that could lure it to Formula E in the future
Ferrari could compete in Formula E in the future as the marque’s cheif executive Sergio Marchionne revealed he has “agonised” over a possible entry.
Marchionne revealed a move into the electric single-seater series for Formula 1’s most famous brand was “possible” if the series drops car swaps and offers greater technical freedom.
The Italian was speaking in a teleconference after Ferrari revealed its Q3 earnings on the New York Stock Exchange.
“The answer is yes,” he said when asked if entering the series was something that had been discussed within Ferrari. “I have agonised over this with my colleagues here in Ferrari for quite a while.”
Marchionne stressed that “if it were to happen it would happen a few years from now”.
Should Ferrari enter FE, it would become a window for the Italian manufacturer to showcase a new range of hybrid/electric road-car machinery that Marchionne said would become “mandatory” in the future.
F1 champion Mercedes recently signed an option to enter the series in 2018/19, while other F1 entities to have evaluated FE include Honda and Sauber.
Prior to taking over the Lotus team in F1, Renault entered FE with the e.dams set-up and after winning the 2015/16 drivers’ and teams’ titles is top so far this year.
