WORLD CHAMP MAXWELL FOR WIMBLEDON

- By Matt James

National Hot Rod World Final winner Adam Maxwell will take part in the Best in Britain showdown at Wimbledon on Sunday night.

Maxwell, from Crumlin in Northern Ireland, lifted this year’s top prize after a dramatic 75-lap final at Foxhall Heath in July.

As a prize for winning the World Final, Maxwell earned a drive in the South African series in July, and he finished in second place in the final.

Since then, the 27-year-old has continued to race in Northern Ireland, where he heads the points going into the winter break in his Vauxhall Tigra.

He has also returned to the mainland to take part in the Hot Rod World Series Scotland contest, and placed second at Lochgelly on a one-off appearance 10 days ago, and he has also competed in the last two English points rounds.

He finished second at the Foxhall Heath round at the end of October despite having to start from the back as a non-registered driver.

The Best in Britain meeting will be the last running of the trophy at the south-west London arena before it is closed for development in mid-april 2017.

“I may never get to race at Wimbledon Stadium again and, as the reigning world champion, I feel it is my duty to be present at all the big meetings and wear the gold roof,” said Maxwell.

“With the National Hot Rods being at the top of the bill on Sunday I think it will be an unbelievable atmosphere and there will be a big crowd.

“Any other short oval driver I’ve talked to has always said ‘you have to go to Wimbledon and drive through the tunnel the buzz you get is simply something else’.

“I finished in second place in the Best in Britain at Ipswich in 2014 so to go one better and finish the year with another title would be a mega achievement. It’s also great news for the sport that Motorsport News is behind this meeting too ( see below). It all helps to get people talking and make everyone aware what is going on with the pinnacle of oval racing.”

The meeting starts at 1730hrs and also features Classic Hot Rods and Historic Stock Cars.
