THE CLASSES

The BRC classes weren’t particularly well populated in 2016. The one that did provide multiple entries was The National Rally Cup, for non-fia homologated machinery.

Robert Blomberg took the title in his R5-spec Mitsubishi Mirage, winning in Scotland, the Nicky Grist and Ulster. Two of those wins came at the hands of his rival though.

Donnie Macdonald was the category’s pacesetter for most of the year. The Scot retired from the Nicky Grist and Ulster with mechanical woe, gifting the Swede a chance. But the Mirage duo still had to work hard, servicing their own car for certain events in the year and were a popular set of champions.

Perhaps the second most populated category was BRC 4, and the almost certain winner didn’t register for the championship, thus handing it to Tony Simpson.

Gee Atherton was the driver not registering, and in a quicker R2 car some would argue he should beat Simpson. But the Liverpool driver still ran Atherton close on events despite his more outdated Fiesta ST.

BRC 2 was wrapped up early on the Nicky Grist, with Matt Edwards the comfortable winner. His overall performances were hugely impressive, scalping a number of R5s on his way to the title.

Chris Wheeler took BRC 3, with two wins as the sole entrant in the category on those events.

Tom Williams headed BRC 5 as the only entrant to compete all year in the category in his Ford Fiesta R1, on the Pirelli Carlisle.
