Alex Lynn targeting full-time WEC switch

British single-seater ace Alex Lynn is aiming for a World Endurance Championship seat for 2017, and is angling for an LMP1 outing at Le Mans.

Lynn has split his duties as Williams F1 development driver with a campaign in GP2 this year, finishing sixth in the points. The 23-year-old announced that the recent season finale in Abu Dhabi would be his last GP2 race as he chases a different career path.

Lynn made his WEC debut in the LMP2 division this year, contesting three rounds with the Manor team. He tested with Aston Martin Racing recently and drove a Toyota TS040 LMP1 last year.

“Sportscars is what I want to do now,” said Lynn. “I’ve enjoyed my three races in the WEC, as well as the test with Aston Martin, and it is where I would like to stay. It’s about getting an opportunity somewhere, hopefully in a factory team, and being paid to race. LMP1 or GTE is where I would like to be racing next year.”

Both Toyota and Porsche have hinted that they could each field three cars at Le Mans next year to bolster the grid in the wake of Audi’s shock withdrawal. Lynn has strong links with Toyota through his mentor, former driver Alex Wurz, who is an advisor to the Japanese brand.

When asked if he thought he would have a chance to race LMP1 at Le Mans, Lynn replied: “It all depends on how many cars the manufacturers run at Le Mans, and it doesn’t take much to imagine which one I am targeting [a seat with].”
