GROUP RALLYING EDITOR “Rallying has its Verstappen in Rovanpera”
Britain’s Elfyn Evans was expected to sign for the DMACK World Rally Team earlier this week – returning him to full-time WRC employment in 2017.
This year’s British Rally champion was due at M-sport yesterday (Tuesday) to meet DMACK managing director Dick Cormack and team principal of the Cumbrian squad Malcolm Wilson.
Motorsport News the third M-sport entry along with Ott Tanak and Sebastien Ogier.
Evans declined to comment on the possibility of his 2017 deal, but Cormack admitted signing the Welshman was firmly on his horizon.
“As I talk to you now, there’s nothing signed at all,” he told MN. “Let’s just see what this week brings.”
The only potential hiccup for Evans could be Mikkelsen. It’s understood there are late negotiations between DMACK and the Rally Australia winner, but Cormack refused to comment on such speculation.
“Elfyn has done a great job for us in the British Rally Championship this year,” said Cormack. “We’re very keen to keep that relationship going into next season with a progression into the WRC in a completely new 2017 World Rally Car. He’s shown us that he’s really hungry to get back to the WRC and we’re looking for a driver who can finish all the rallies, potentially score points and help us with our development towards the 2018 season.
“Elfyn has shown what a great test driver he can be as well as what he’s capable of in competition too.”
Evans demonstrated his worth as a competitor once again last weekend, when he won the Bettega Memorial Rallysprint in DMACK’S Ford Fiesta RS WRC.
