Jeff Gordon: His dream, drive and destiny

- Jack Benyon

RRP £30 ISBN: 1603803963 OK, NASCAR isn’t a staple of MN. But when someone as synonymous with their sport as Jeff Gordon retires, it’s time to take notice.

After retiring at the end of 2015 to motorsport-wide praise – and tears from his fans – the California native spent much of 2016 working on his book. He also returned to fill in for the concussion-hit Dale Earnhardt Jr in the top series.

Gordon launched onto the NASCAR scene at the perfect time. The series was crying out for a face that reflected its new place in society; it was no longer seen as banger racing for the south. With tobacco money and increasing commercial interest, NASCAR needed a fresh face and it got that in the mustachioed Jeff Gordon. After four championships, 805 races and 93 victories, and sans mustache, he’s written a book.

“I purposely waited until I retired from driving so the book would encompass my entire career,” says Gordon.

“It’s a lot of things that haven’t been told, things from my parents that I didn’t even know myself, the early days and how everything started. But there’s also things that haven’t been discussed as much before and also my final year and how that went, we really get that into the book. I’m really proud of it.”

It bares all, from his racing career to a personal life often unfairly played out in the US tabloids.

Sit back and take a rollercoaster ride through one of the most famous sportsmen in America’s storied and successful racing drivers.
