Bosses want final WRX to be a spectacle
Campaigners fighting the closure of the capital’s last remaining motor sport venue at Wimbledon Stadium have received a boost with the news that the government could look to list the venue.
An email from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport said a review had thrown up sufficient new information to justify the original decision, which was rejected early last year, now being revisited.
A full assessment of the stadium will be conducted by Historic England, including a site visit, examining the detail of the substantial body of information handed in by campaigners.
Campaigner Michael Burnage said: “Assessments by Historic England are conducted based on ‘readily available information’. The original decline decision we received highlighted the complete lack of available information about the stadium’s history.
“As a team we set about rectifying this new age problem with an old school solution. With boots on the ground we visited numerous libraries and museums, and spoke to former employees and former local residents who had since moved away from the area. It was extremely hard work, but what we unearthed is potentially game changing and has initiated this new assessment.”
Historic England will now conduct its assessment mindful that the bulldozers are due in early April.
