HIGGINS IN GT4 SUPERCUP MOVE
Combe FF1600 champ to race for family team
Two-time Castle Combe Formula Ford 1600 champion Adam Higgins will switch to the Ginetta GT4 Supercup this season, while his father, Bob Higgins, will race the same car in Combe GTS.
Adam, 30, won the FF1600 title in 2013 and 2014 and raced a Ginetta for the first time last year with a one-off appearance in Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship when it visited Combe as one of its rounds.
“The Supercup attracts me because of the high profile and the fact they are so tight on the regulations,” said Higgins. “Formula Ford is getting a bit lapse with regulations – there seems to be some very powerful engines. The Supercup was very attractive because they are very fast cars and look mega.
“We bought a G50 in July and did one meeting with it. I was second to Dave Krayem in his modified car so was over the moon to be that close to him. We were bumper to bumper the whole race and that gave me the bug – it was the most fun I had in a car for a while.”
Higgins will drive for Hurricane Motorsport, a new team he has formed with his father Bob – himself a four-time Combe FF1600 champion.
“We’ve gone with Hurricane Motorsport which is named after dad Bob ‘Hurricane’ Higgins, a name he was called in his stock car racing days,” said Higgins Jr. “He’s acting as team principal and I’m managing the team. I’m going to do the championship this year to get us going a bit and Dad will be doing Combe GTS in the same car, which will be interesting! Then there’s a chance of advancing to global GT stuff with Ginetta too. I don’t want to drive a lorry for the rest of my life, so it’s a good opportunity.”
Higgins is now looking to raise some sponsorship to ensure he has enough budget to complete the full campaign this season.
He added: “I don’t know how I’m going to fare against everyone else. If I get a top five finish I will be overjoyed and if I get a top three then I would be absolutely ecstatic.”
