Moffett targets easiest championship win

-

Sam Moffett merely has to start this weekend’s Cork ‘20’ Rally to win the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, with a historic triple crown still on for the Monaghan driver.

Moffett could become the first driver ever to win the ITRC, Irish National and Irish Forest Rally Championships in the same season. He has already won the last two, sealing the Forest title last weekend ( see Rally Reports page 18).

Alastair Fisher is second in the championship and makes the trip to Cork in his Ford Fiesta R5, despite facing a near impossible task of the championship.

Last year’s winner Josh Moffett, brother of Sam, starts as car number one ahead of his brother and Fisher. Kevin Kelleher is the first and only major WRC car on the entry at car four. Daniel Cronin rounds out the top 10 in his first ITRC appearance in a Ford Fiesta R5. He won the Clare Stages Rally two weeks ago, just his second event in the car.

Justin Ryan and Jenna Mccann will go head-to-head for the Junior championship title. Honda Civic pilot Ryan trails Mccann (Ford Fiesta R2) by three points heading into the season finale.

The modified (Kevin Eves) and historic (Barry Jones) titles have both been wrapped up already – on the Ulster and Rally Isle of Man respectively.

The event gets underway on Saturday in Macroom Town Square at 0900hrs.
