CURRIE GETS ST TROPHY PRIZE DRIVE FOR WALES RALLY GB

Scottish youngster gets anr 2 for the national

Alasdair Currie has won an entry into Wales Rally GB National in a Ford Fiesta R2, after finishing second in the Fiesta ST Trophy.

In July the series announced a new prize structure, which awards the ST Trophy champion two rounds in the British Rally Championship in the R2 courtesy of lubricant sponsor Castrol, which owns the car.

The second prize is an entry in Rally GB, and Currie believes he has raised the costs needed to get the car to the event and to run it.

“We’ve got some help from folks and some sponsors, so we should get a test in the car the week before GB, and go and get comfortable in the car,” said Currie, who took his first ST Trophy win on the Trackrod earlier this month in his first full season of forest rallying.

“Hopefully we’ll make the most of the opportunity that arises. I’ve never driven with a sequential box before, it’s a bit of a step up [but] I like a bit of a challenge.

“I knew this year that if I crashed, that would be it, so I’ve driven at around 80 per cent this year. We’ve been up there and beating guys who have been in the woods for a few years.”

Currie could step up to a fourwheel-drive car next year in the BTRDA, although his work involves two weeks on and two weeks off, so any series will need to fit with that. “I’m a bit limited [by work], but whatever I do it needs to be a step up. I’m thinking about four-wheel-drive, maybe a clubman Subaru,” he said.
