Fender steps up to GT4 Supercup for 2018

-

Angus Fender is set to become the youngest driver in the Ginetta GT4 Supercup in 2018 after entering the championship.

Fender, 17, has bought one of the Leeds manufacturer’s G55s and is set to begin testing in the new year with new team Century Motorsport.

“It’s a really exciting challenge,” said Fender. “I’ll be going in with only one year of car experience at 17. But I’m looking forward to getting out and competing against some really top-flight racers.

“Back in 2008 when I did my ARKS test, the person who took us was Nathan Freke [Century boss].

“He’s [Freke] always been someone who has wanted to bring young talent into the sport.”

One of the major factors in the deal to drive with Century was the opportunity for Fender to work for the team as a mechanic on British GT rounds.

Fender finished outside of the top 10 in the Ginetta GT5 Challenge last year, but improved his results considerably in the second half of the year in his first year racing cars.

“I went off the back of my most successful season in 2015 in karting to my first season in cars,” he added. “We only signed with the team two weeks before the start of the season. I underestimated it [the step from karts to cars].”

Fender is the son of Fender-broad Classic Cars boss and regular historics racer Neil.

Former Xentek Motorsport co-owner Nicholas Hart has split from the team and has started his own outfit, Hart GT. He plans to run three cars in the Supercup this season and has plenty of experience in the category having engineered Tom Ingram to the title when he was with JHR Developments back in 2013. Xentek ran cars in the Supercup and GT5 Challenge in 2017.
