GOODWOOD READY TO SHINE

FULL EVENT PREVIEW

-

The recreation of the 1936 Auto Union C Type is a remarkable piece of engineering, reflecting a time when the German manufacturers rewrote grand prix racing. Hans Stuck will wrestle it up the hill accompanied by the most incredible sound track.

From Renault Classic comes the stunning Alpine Renault A442B in the hands of former F1 racer Michel Leclere. The sports-racer was built for Le Mans and the bubble-canopied A442B won the 1978 24-hours.

There are few hillclimb cars as bonkers as a BMW E36 with a 600bhp Judd V8 Formula 1 engine fitted. That’s what German driver Joerg Weidinger will be handling and the noise alone will be fantastic.

Few sports-racing cars have the charisma of the Porsche 917, the German manufacturer’s Le Mans winner in 1970 and ’71. Three examples will be on hand and one of them will be driven by fivetime Le Mans winner Derek Bell.

The 156 ‘sharknose’ was Ferrari’s 1961 F1 car, yet none of the six built survived beyond the end of their period use. Several replicas have since been built and two will be at Goodwood, one for former Ferrari driver Arturo Merzario.

The BMW 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’ is a glorious example of an early 1970s racing touring car from a time when BMW and Ford went head-to-head. Fittingly, period CSL racer Dieter Quester will drive the car from BMW’S collection.

It is rare to see one Mercedes W125 so to have three of the pre-war monsters on hand is a real coup. Two of them will run on the hill and the 1937 5.6-litre, 600bhp grand prix cars are simply sensational.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Jaguar XK120, the most famous example will take to the hill. NUB 120 was a privately-entered car for Ian Appleyard won many major rallies including the 1951 RAC Rally.

From the Indianapolis Hall of Fame comes the remarkable Lotus Pratt and Whitney 56, the STP Special. The four-wheel drive gas turbine car came close to winning at Indy in 1968 before being ruled out by regulation changes.

Surely the fastest of the collection of cars marking 60 years of the Lola marque will be the thundering Formula 5000 T400 of Michael Lyons. Other cars in the class may be potentially quicker, but few will be driven with such pace and commitment.
