New Clio Cup squad Matrix Motorsport targeting a move into the BTCC next season

-

Renault UK Clio Cup team Matrix Motorsport is evaluating a move into the British Touring Car Championship next year.

The squad was brand new for the 2018 season, fielding four cars in the Clio category, with former BTCC drivers Mike Epps and Andy Wilmot among its line-up.

The Snetterton meeting last month proved to be a landmark weekend for Matrix as Epps took the fledgling outfit’s first podium, before then taking a second place at Rockingham last weekend.

Team boss Jeff Alden – who is also part of the team’s Clio line-up – says the squad is now working on graduating into touring cars next season and it already has a partnership with Power Maxed BTCC racer Senna Proctor.

“Matrix was a new business at the beginning of the year and it’s been a bit of a baptism of fire,” he said. “It’s been a massive learning curve and we’ve laid good foundations this year. We’re going to continue in Clios next year and we’re looking at other options including with touring cars. We’ve got all of our sponsors back on board next year and have got a couple of new ones too.

“Snetterton was a cracking meeting for us [substitute driver Ash Hand finished second on-the-road until a penalty promoted Epps to third]. Podiums are what we had been working for all season – we were trying not to make fools of ourselves!

“I’m really pleased with how it’s going and it’s full credit to the guys, Dave [Hayes team manager] and Andy [Wilmot, driver and team director].”
