Fighting for Scottish title a ‘big bonus’ for Maestro man

-

MG Maestro driver Ross Mccallum says fighting for the Scottish Tarmack Championship is a “big bonus” as he aims to take the class title in his eclectic machine.

The Scot, 27, competes against high-powered Ford Escort Mk2s in his class, although his Maestro isn’t quite a road-car spec.

“There’s not much Maestro left in it now,” he said. “It’s got a two-litre Type R engine, final drive change, bag tank, pedal box, plate ’diff and custome engine mounts and exhaust.

“I bought it as a 1600 when I was 16, I’m 27 now. I started rallying in 2012 with it and did a year and a bit and then crashed at Solway and had to rebuild it.”

Mccallum sits second in the overall championship after losing the lead last time out on the Tyneside Stages.

“I said at the start of the year I thought we’d struggle to win our class this year, as the Escort guys get quicker and quicker. But here we are and we have three [class wins].

“It’s going to be tough [to win the title]: anyone from any class can win it. There’s quick cars in every class.

“I’m not sure we’ll complete the season because of budget reasons and we’re looking for sponsors.”

Mccallum has scored on seven events, as has title leader Michael Harbour (Citroen C2). Harbour leads by seven points.
